Breakdown response and commissioning support, from a local crew

When automation stops, the cost is not the repair. It is the hours before someone competent is standing in front of the panel. Our crew is based in Bintulu, which is what that number actually depends on.

The short version

What we get called for

  • Control system faults, processor in fault, I/O errors, communication loss, a machine that will not leave manual
  • Drive and motor faults, repeated trips, overtemperature, a fault code that keeps coming back after a reset
  • Electrical faults on switchgear, MCCs and distribution, including finding the intermittent one
  • Commissioning support for new equipment, including the OEM integration that arrives undocumented
  • Power quality investigation, nuisance tripping, harmonic and transient issues
  • Programme recovery where the only copy of the logic is in a processor nobody can talk to any more

How we troubleshoot

The way a breakdown goes wrong is almost never a lack of knowledge. It is changing several things at once under pressure and losing track of what was true when.

  1. Write the gate down before the test. Decide, in advance, what result will prove or eliminate what. A test with no stated criterion produces an opinion, and opinions do not converge.
  2. Bisect rather than guess. Halve the system, prove which half holds the fault, repeat. Slower for the first twenty minutes and much faster after that.
  3. One change at a time, logged. Including the changes that did nothing, because that is the list that stops the same ground being covered twice at shift handover.
  4. Confirm by elimination, not by the fix working. A fault that disappears after three simultaneous changes has not been diagnosed, and it will be back.
  5. Hand back in a known state, with what was done, what was proven, what is still open, and what should be watched.
Two traps worth knowing before the panel is opened

Read the diagnostic register before clearing it. An error code that is cleared without being read has destroyed the only evidence of what happened, and the plant now waits for a recurrence.

"Still available in manual" has to be verified. If the manual path runs through a PLC output, a processor in STOP kills manual too. That has to be checked at the wiring before any recovery plan depends on it.

Planned support, not just breakdowns

Reactive call-out is the expensive way to buy engineering time, and it is the only option if nothing is in place beforehand. Planned arrangements we run:

  • Scheduled site visits at an agreed frequency, covering inspection, backup verification and the small items that never justify their own call-out
  • Retained system engineer support, a defined allocation of engineering time each month against your systems, so the person answering already knows the plant
  • Shutdown support, planned and resourced against your window, which for most plants is the only time real work can happen
  • Backup and recovery verification, because a backup that has never been restored is a hope. Restoring one, once, onto spare hardware is the only thing that turns it into a spare.

The retained arrangement is usually the one that changes plant behaviour, because it removes the internal friction of raising a purchase order before anyone will look at a problem. Small faults get reported early instead of being lived with until they become shutdowns.

Why local matters

Our engineers and installation crew are based in Sarawak, with Sarawak work permits already in place. For a Bintulu or Samalaju site that means a response measured in hours, a crew that can stay until the fault is closed rather than until a return flight, and warranty attendance that does not need to be scheduled around travel.

It also means the same people come back. An engineer who commissioned your system is a materially different proposition at three in the morning than whoever is on the rota.

Questions we get asked

How fast can you get to site?

For Bintulu and Samalaju, same day is normal for an urgent call. Elsewhere in Sarawak it depends on the location and access. West Malaysia is planned rather than immediate, and we will say so rather than imply otherwise.

Do you work on systems you did not install?

Most of our service work is on other people's systems. What helps is having the drawings, the source project and any historical fault records available before we arrive.

Can you support us out of hours?

Yes, under an agreed arrangement. Out-of-hours response works when it is set up in advance, with a named contact and an agreed escalation. Calling an unknown supplier at midnight rarely produces a good outcome for anyone.

What if the logic only exists inside the processor?

Recovery is often possible, and it should be attempted before anything is power-cycled or replaced. This is also the strongest argument for a verified backup regime, since the recovery that works is the one that was not needed.

Start with the plant, not the proposal

Tell us the asset, the platform and the constraint. If it is not something we should be doing, we will say so and tell you who should.
